The Order of the Iron Crown (German österreichischen Ordens der Eisernen Krone) was created by Napoleon I on June 5, 1805, as the highest order of the Italian kingdom. In 1814 it was canceled. After the transfer of most of the Italian kingdom under the rule of the Austrian Empire, the order was restored by the Austrian emperor in 1816 and survived until the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the First World War, the Order of the Iron Crown was bestowed on officers of the army and navy for courage in battle. Many officers of the Austro-Hungarian allies were awarded this award.
